The focus of alternative medicine is on the whole being and doesn’t look at an illness or ailment as an isolated event. As all bodily systems work together, we would be remiss in assuming that other bodily systems were not affected in some way. Take for instance Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Recent research suggests that leaky gut is a contributing factor in many illnesses and disorders, including cognitive disorders such as dementia, autoimmune disorders, inflammation, and diabetes. The origin of leaky gut can be traced to prescription medication use including receiving antibiotics as far back as childhood.

In addition to the overuse of medications, environmental toxins also contribute to leaky gut syndrome. Many have turned to alternative therapies, such as herbal medicine, essential oils, pre- and probiotic therapy, detox cleanses, and Ayurvedic medicine to combat ailments caused by toxins.

When I was young, I was subjected to the overuse of antibiotics for my chronic infections related to tonsillitis. I missed the first few months of Kindergarten due to recurring infections until I got my tonsils out at the age of four. That was back in the day when children could start school if they turned five before the end of the year. Once my tonsils were removed, the infections stopped and I was able to resume Kindergarten the following school year. However, I believe that the constant use of antibiotics as a child contributed to my ongoing digestive issues throughout my life.

The awareness of these issues inspired me to look deeper into alternative medicine and reversing the effects of Western conventional treatments for me and my family. I have tried many alternative therapies; however, the ones I use on a regular basis are essential oils, herbal medicine, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or tapping, and Reiki along with my spiritual practices of prayer and meditation. Essential oils have many medicinal benefits which include improving digestive health, helping respiratory function, cleansing, and improving mental clarity and focus. Herbal medicines help in similar ways. EFT is used to eliminate the emotional blockages that keep us stuck in old patterns and ways of thinking and balance our energy systems by tapping on meridian points. It’s a type of acupuncture without needles. Reiki, another type of energy healing, helps restore physical and emotional well-being by channeling energy. I use prayer and meditation to connect to Spirit and Truth. Together, my alternative therapies help balance my heart, mind, body, and soul.
